Bodie Ghost Town
Gold was discovered in this area on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1859. The mining town of Bodie sprang up and boasted a population as high as 8,000 people. During 1877-1881, Bodie's mining district included 30 different mines and nine stamp mills. There were more than 60 saloons. The boom years were over quickly as the unsuccessful mines began closing and the population dropped quickly. The abandoned town of Bodie is now an old west ghost town.
